  The Hero's Journey

Most of us have heard of the hero's journey and the late Joseph Campbell who wrote extensively on it and other cultural issues (Joseph Campbell Foundation). In the typical journey, our hero is confronted with a challenge which is typically refused. Trials follow. Reluctant acceptance is finally embraced. More trials follow and demons bested. Finally, the quest is completed; the result is not always as expected at the onset. But, the hero has prevailed (sometimes at great personal cost).

We are all on hero's journeys; they are what life is. Facing and overcoming the tough challenges, living through the whatevers, embracing the unknown are all part of the human experience. Because of our gifts -- both those given naturally and those earned through experience -- we don't always see the magnitude of the journey and dismiss our accomplishments as routine or, "its nothing." Giving self-credit, though, is a part of self-love.

Think about your accomplishments of the past 2 weeks (while they are still relatively fresh in your mind). What hero's journeys have you completed? Have you congratulated yourself? Have you taken praise graciously? Are you missing the hero within? If so, take another look. You're worth it.
