Maintenance is a Dirty Word?
The only maintenance job (cleaning latrines) I
ever liked was the one I had as a Camp Counselor. I chose it
because, unlike many other jobs around the camp, I knew exactly
where the "dirt" was and what it took to maintain it. Checking
and cleaning the locker rooms and other jobs had just too many
surprises. But washing dishes, vacuuming, etc, are not on my "I
can't wait to..." list. I suspect I am not alone in this.
Maintenance, though, is necessary for all systems -- human,
mechanical, electronic -- and while the cycles may be different,
failing to maintain the "machine" with exercise, PM, or
de-bugging can, and often does, lead to undesirable results.
Pair each of your maintenance chores with
some activity you really want to do and don't do what you want
until the partnered maintenance work is completed. If you have
5 things to maintain, you need 5 pairs, 9 will get you 9. Like
most things in life, it you make it sporting, a game, you will
tend to achieve more.
